PROFESSIONAL TREE SURGERY SERVICES

RM Services undertake a number of tree surgery services throughout the North West of England including crown thinning, crown reductions, and crown lifting. These are described below in more detail:

CROWN THINNING

The removal of a percentage of the branch structure, without changing the overall outline of the tree is referred to as crown thinning.

Crown thins are usually carried out to allow more light to pass through the tree without unnecessarily ‘topping’ the tree, which in many cases leads to a denser crown in the long run. It may also be required to reduce the sail area of vulnerable trees or to reduce water uptake. Heavier, larger limbs may also be removed or reduced back to suitable points, providing the form of the tree is not damaged or the tree is not left in an unbalanced shape.

Carrying out this procedure also provides a perfect opportunity to clean the internal structure of the crown of any dead/dying/diseased branches.  In addition it also allows our tree surgeons to carry out a close inspection of the tree throughout the work. Carefully examining any crossing/rubbing limbs which could become hazardous later in the trees life.

Crown lifting is preferable over reduction in many circumstances. Often providing a longer term solution to your trees maintenance whilst still preserving its natural beauty. Its often said within the industry that some of the best tree work is un-noticeable, something we at RM Services strive to achieve.

crown reductions

Used to reduce the height of the tree, and/or the spread of the crown of the tree. This is generally conducted for aesthetic reasons, to allow more light, or simply to contain a tree that is outgrowing its living conditions.  In some cases crown reductions may be carried out on larger specimens as a means to remove dead wood or “stag horns” at the top of a mature tree.

The choice between a crown reduction over a crown thin is often dependant on tree species.  Whilst some trees react well to the treatment, others have a poor ability to compartmentalize the wound, meaning future growth could pose a hazard.  In some cases reduction is the only option, and care should be taken to monitor the regrowth. This should then be pruned or ‘cut back’ at regular intervals.

We would be happy to advise you on the best option for your trees and always recommend a site visit to accurately assess each individual situation in person.

crown lifting

The removal of the lowest branches of the tree is referred to as crown lifting.  In most cases a uniform height above ground level is created, therefore exposing a clear trunk and often transforming the look of a tree. Aside from aesthetics there are other more practical reasons for crown lifting. Our customers are always amazed at how much more light is allowed into their garden from removing lower branches rather than carrying out a heavy reduction. We always discuss this option during the quotation stage. In addition crown lifting is often carried out to provide access to vehicles and pedestrians. In the case of highways, a minimum clearance for vehicles is 5.2 metres (17 feet), and for pedestrians 2.5m (8 feet) must be achieved.
